You can turn any home into a haunted house for Halloween by adding the right Halloween decorations. Here are simple do-it-yourself suggestions for Halloween decorations that you, your family, and the neighbors will enjoy this fall.

Gourd candleholders

Dim lighting is essential in creating the right Halloween mood so work on that as the first of your Halloween decorations. Create a low light atmosphere in your home by using candles instead of overhead lighting. To create a spooky candleholder, cut a hole in the center of a gourd, squash, or miniature pumpkin. This might be hard to do so start by gently rocking the knife back and forth until you create a slit. Keep moving the knife carefully until there is an open section large enough to hold a candle.

Safety warning: Make sure you put the candleholder on a tray with aluminum foil. As with all Halloween decorations, advise your children to stay away from the flame.

Witch’s cauldron

To create the ultimate witch’s cauldron you will need a large bowl, dry ice, and water. You can purchase dry ice from a local ice cream parlor or grocery store. Put the dry ice in a container with a tight lid. Then submerge the container in water. Warm water will produce more smoke that will disappear rapidly while colder water will produce less smoke that will last longer. You can put the cauldron at your front door or as the centerpiece on your dining room table.

Safety warning: Do not touch the dry ice with your bare hands. Either use tongs or thick gloves. Make sure that children do not play with the dry ice.

Glowing ghosts

A glowing ghost is the perfect example of how simple and fun making Halloween decorations can be. Activate a mini glow stick, slip it inside a balloon, and blow up the balloon. Position the knot of the balloon at the top center and use a black marker to make a face. Use a thin or transparent white cloth to cover the balloon, cut a small hole in the cloth and push the knot through so you can tie a string to it and hang it from a tree, your door, or a lamppost in your front yard. Your glowing ghost will blow in the wind, letting all your neighbors know that Halloween has arrived.

Halloween’s just around the corner. It’s that time of year again when ghosts and goblins roam the streets. Here are some ideas for Halloween costumes that are easy to execute.

Halloween can be an exciting time for kids and if it happens to be the kid\’s first Halloween, then you should dress him up in the cutest possible costumes. Even assuming your kid is older and has enjoyed a Halloween or two, still make this Halloween special by dressing him or her up to stand out against the rest. Imagine the kid\’s delight when everyone fusses over him and raves about how cute he looks.

Selecting and ordering kid\’s Halloween costumes can be great fun. There are several websites that sell ready to order costumes. They may cost a little more, but save you all the bother of trying to create one and also offering a wide choice of professional looking costumes. If you want to dress up your kid in more classic ways, there are still lots of options available on the internet. Dress them up in the classic Halloween pumpkin, or perhaps a mischievous monkey. Nothing could be cuter than your little tike in a bear costume.

But some parents may like to make for their child a great kid Halloween costume by themselves at home. It\’s a great feeling having your kid wear something that you painstakingly made with love and care. Opt for a classic ghost with some sheets from around the house and some white face paint. A lady bug or a butterfly could also be made at home with a little more time and effort. Another great idea is to find an old sweatshirt lying around and glue ears to the hood. From there you can make almost any lovable cartoon character come to life. Want your little angel to be, well, a little angel?

Take an ordinary white t-shirt and sew on fabric wings to the back. Some gold ribbon and a gold headband for the halo makes your angel complete. If you are pressed for time and not able to readily get the materials, you can simply paint the face to transform your child into a lion, tiger, or butterfly. When you really think about it, there can be ideas galore. Opt for a suit that has few pieces and no mask. Some cute toddler costume ideas include a monkey, doggy, kitty or princess. Use face paint instead of a mask and easily attach ears or a crown with either a headband or barrettes. A shortened monkey tail will also help avoid potential tripping.

To ensure your kid truly enjoys the Halloween costume, remember to choose a costume that your kid will be comfortable wearing and can move about freely. Avoid making the costume heavy or cumbersome that your kid cannot run around, play games, or a dress that hurts. Another useful tip to make things convenient is to make the costumes bathroom accessible to avoid any abnormal situations. Another thing you need to remember is your kid should be able to eat, walk and play without being discomfort.

It is of paramount importance that the kid Halloween costumes are absolutely safe. All materials used must be flame-proof as it is difficult to be constantly supervise whether the child adheres to safety norms when lit candles are around. You can even swap candles for glow sticks to make things safer. Halloween costumes for kids are meant to be fun and not a hazard which may make the night a nightmarish affair.

Maxine Clarke asked:

Pumpkins, gory costumes, spiders and E-numbered-up kids hammering on your door. Are you ready for this year’s Halloween-fest? The supermarkets have been since the last Bank Holiday in August, so what’s it all about?

Many people exist quite happily without ever acknowledging Halloween. However, most of us surround ourselves with spooks, ghouls, demons, magic and spells, wizards and witches and the living dead every year because of an ancient pagan festival called Samhain and All Saints’ Day from the Christian calendar.

While we are munching on pumpkin pie and bobbing apples dressed as zombies we may want to remember the Celts who 2,000 years ago would have been throwing the bones of slaughtered livestock onto bonfires and wearing masks in order to calm evil spirits. This festival traditionally celebrated the end of harvest time and the beginning of the Celtic New Year on November 1.

In later years the Christian church began marking All Saints’ Day at the same time of year. Their belief was that souls were released from purgatory on All Hallow’s Eve, the night before All Saints’ Day, for 48 hours. This was parallel to the pagan belief that the spirits of the dead could spill into the land of the living on this particular night.

Over time, ideas from both festivals merged and became known as Hallowe’en in mainstream culture. The pagan and Christian religions continue to celebrate with their own separate events too.

Halloween is marked around the world in similar form, from Mexico’s Day of the Dead to China’s Ghost Festival, and increasingly as a result of the influence of American culture in areas such as Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Europe.

Since the Americans hijacked Halloween it has become an excuse for any kind of themed event for adults as well as kids: from Halloween club nights to midnight screenings of horror films at cinemas and spooky TV specials.

If you fancy a night of dastardly devilry, there are plenty of events on around the country. The All Hallow’s Eve Ball at The Crypt, near Chancery Lane in London, is being held in aid of UNICEF on Friday October 31. Food is being provided by The Bleeding Heart restaurants in the rooms where King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon feasted on their wedding day.

For those interested in exploring the pagan roots of Halloween, the Caduceus Pagan and Witchcraft Halloween Bash at Conway Hall, Holborn in London could be just the ticket. The changing seasons will be celebrated with dance, song, drama and ritual on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 October.

Nicely coinciding with school half term holidays, Bristol Zoo is running a series of family activities from October 24 to November 5. These include an interactive trail with residence witch, Ninny Noo; a pumpkin carving competition; and a Halloween Parade with prizes for the scariest costumes.

Along the country’s heritage railways, ghoulish ghost trains will be steaming ahead for a range of family and adult seasonal rides. Railways to search for include Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway, Mid-Norfolk Railway, Darlington Railway Centre and Museum, South Tynedale Railway, Kent & East Sussex Railway, Bodmin & Wenford Railway, Foxfield Steam Railway and North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

The Spooky Sleepover at the London Bridge Experience invites guests to join the Society of Paranormal Investigation and spend the night of Saturday November 15 soaking up the unexplained in a historic setting. This special event is in aid of St John Ambulance and is for over-18s only.

If you can’t face going out in public on All Hallow’s Eve, you can always get decorating and create your own haunted house. Put on your fangs and fake blood, get some Halloween spirit and enjoy a good old fashioned fancy dress knees up. You should frighten off the youth beating down your door at least.
